Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. Which sounds expensive, because it is. You’ll find it hard to step out into your backyard and pick some straight from the ground. Why? Because naturally occurring Tritium is tremendously difficult to get. Tritium is produced in small quantities with the interaction of the atmosphere with cosmic rays. This means you’ll have to have skills and gear to locate and take it out. Luckily, someone has already thought about that for us.

Anyway why do we care about Tritium?

Warning science!

What is awesome about Tritium is the discharged electrons from the radioactive decay of tritium cause phosphors to glow. This results in radioactive self-powered lighting equipment called betalights. At least now we are getting somewhere!

How Could It Help Me?

So, this is were it gets functional. Tritium can give off light, it’s not actually dangerous except if you eat it and it can be used in watches, exit signs, map lights, firearm night sights along with my favourite, camping items such as kit markers.

Buying Vehicles – New Or Second Hand?

13 Feb 2012

There are various things to consider when acquiring a car. To start with, you will have to make your mind up if you want a new or a second hand car. Now’s a great time for buying – the auto industry has been in the doldrums with sales being way down for some time already, meaning the market for both used and new cars is a flood with options and prices are attractively low. If it is going to be your first car, though, select second hand.

The strongest reason could be your absence of experience. Even though you are one of the most prodigious drivers in the world, you will scratch your car and you will endure at least minor accidents. One outcome of accidents is that the value of the car immediately takes a knock; the benefit of a used car is that the loss in value won’t be as severe. Sure, you are going to fall in love with this car too, considering that it is your first, but once you understand the consequences, you will surely be glad for having bought that second hand car. Another factor to take into account is the cost of insuring your vehicle. Most often, young people will not have so much money to spend, and even if they do, they would probably rather use it on other things. Insurance coverage for a used car is considerably cheaper, and the repair costs are not so high. The thing to get is that a used car is financially less costly.

Figuring Out Which Vehicle You Want

Scanning the car lot for the automobile that most grabs your attention is not the way to go about it. Good looks tell you nothing at all about the status of the engine. Second, it is advisable to have someone experienced with you, so that person could determine all the positive and negative aspects about your future car. In this way you could learn that a car consumes 15 liters of gas per 100 km before buying it. You don’t really want to spend needless money on gasoline each month, do you?

Optional Approaches To Find A Car

There are more ways to buy a car than coming to the neighbourhood dealer. Looking online is one method that’s becoming really popular. Nevertheless, it is certainly not like ordering a pair of shoes. You will need to see and to test-drive the car individually. It must be clear that no company is able to send a car to you for taking a look at.

How To Roadtest The Vehicle

Listen to the motor. You must subject the vehicle to both city as well as highway driving. Make an effort to attain high speeds, and ask the owner to allow you to drive it for a longer period. This will enable you to check how dependable the car is throughout the rainy season with its attendant inner-city traffic snarl ups, as well as over a weekend dash to the coast.

It does not make a difference regardless of whether you are buying a new or second-hand car, a trustworthy Atlanta insurance agency agent can assist with buying the most efficient auto insurance Atlanta Georgia.

Choosing the Right RV Tyres For You

12 Feb 2012

Selecting 4WD Tyres is extremely tricky. There are such a lot of parameters that you wish to maximise that this was terribly hard to decide on the best compromise.

On bitumen roads I would like a quiet ride, good cornering and stopping capability in both dry or damp climatic conditions. I also need good tracking to avoid driving fatigue for road driving and good balance to avoid any vibration. Off road the requirements are completely different where I want an open tread for good self cleaning properties in mud, resistance to punctures with a heavy usage construction and masses of general grip. In all cases I need my tyres to be as lower cost as possible and to last so long as possible before requiring replacement.

Sadly many of those requirements are contradictory. Gigantic open treads that are good in the mud are loud on the bitumen. Hard compounds that last a considerable time tend to have worse wet weather cornering and stopping ability. Essentially good on-road tyres have a tendency to be poor performers off road and vice versa.

Types of 4WD tyres

So when it came time to pick my tyres I had to decide which of these features was most critical. I use the vehicle 90% of the time for going to work or driving the family around the town on weekends. Even driving to a camping location or where a 4wd track starts is mostly highway driving so on-road safety, performance and comfort are the most significant features.

The Pajero has a name for suffering a little from increased road noise. I believe this is because it doesn’t have a new framework so there’s less padding between the suspension and the body of the car. Due to this choosing a low-noise tyre is rather more critical than normal as any noise will be noticed more. When I’m off road most of the terrain I encounter is beach sand or gravel track. With all this considered I decided that an All Terrain kind of tyre was the best choice with its bias toward on-road conditions but still with better off-road performance than a standard road tyre.

Makes of 4WD tyres

The next question is which make of all terrain tyre? Some of the brands which make claims to have a harder compound seem to have reviews that suggest that when they get a little older their grip levels can drop seriously for bitumen driving. In my view I’d rather my tyres wore out a little quicker but always gripped well, it’s not worth saving a bit of money for the sake of safety.

I also needed to purchase a tyre exactly the same size as the standard tyres. This is thanks to the fact that I do not desire any effect on the speedometer precision or performance of the traction and stability control systems. A different size tyre might or might not effect these however I just do not require the bother of attempting to fix it if it does. These points excluded a large amount of tyres making the decision a little easier.

So at the end after much debate I determined to give the Pro Comp range a try. They’d quite a few enthusiastic reviews showing that it has fantastic on-road performance while still maintaining decent off-road capability. I have had them for quite a while now and they have lived up to expectancies.

The biggest thing I have learned about selecting four wheel drive tyres is this: select what is Suitable for you. Don’t believe the exaggeration that asserts your Have to have a light van, 35 inch, mud terrain which will last 10 years. Look at how you use your car and buy what seems sensible for you.

Making tyres last for longer

The very last thing I have to say is: revolve your tyres! My previous tyres would have lasted a lot longer if I had have revolved them each 5000km or so. Instead , at 15000km they developed a unpleasant whirring sound that really sounded like a blown diff or worn wheel bearings. It took a bit to work out it was just the tyres after much concern. To revolve your tyres move the rear tyres direct to the front keeping them on the same sides they were on.

Move the front tyres to the rear but swap sides so that they are basically revolving in the other way. In a full cycle of revolution this can mean that each corner of every tread block will get the same wear and this could hopefully reduce uneven wear that causes excessive noise. The other thing I’d say is to keep an eye open for tyres designed to avoid humming noise by having variable block sizes as these can develop this pulsating whiring noise that in my viewpoint is worse.

4 wheel drive cars and SUV’s usually arrive fitted out with general road tyres, or at the very least a combination on road and general off road tyre. The 4WD tyres that your 4×4 came with are not always the best ones for the applications that you want to use it for.

Living in an RV

12 Feb 2012

Since Janurary of 2007 I have been living the nomad lifestyle. I owned a house and had the mortgage and yard upkeep and just wanted a change. The market in my state was not yet poor and I had enough equity in my house to make the change. I decided to sell and make a profit. With the profit I bought a modest travel trailer, truck and put the rest into the bank. Even if you do not have a house for sale you can make this change happen. Instead of waiting for your finances to be perfect, just buy an older travel trailer and older truck. A good friend of mine did just that and he is living happy like me with a used trailer. With gas prices rising you may think it is not a frugal lifestyle, but it still is. You will regret not going, and never regret going.

I bought a thirty foot travel trailer and pull it with my fullsize 2006 Toyota Tundra Truck. I tried to buy the best quality trailer I could afford and I think I did pretty good. The quality of Sunnybrook is well known. The kitchen is plenty big enough also. When you purchase the travel trailer make sure you match it to your truck size. If you buy an RV make sure you consider the fuel costs of those big behemoths.

Every modern day nomad needs some entertainment in trailer. I have a laptop, flatscreen tv, digital rabbit ears, dvd player, and the trailer has a nice built in stereo system. To power all this stuff, I have a large inverter connected to a bank of 4 house batteries. My favorite brand for the electrical stuff is Xantrex. I also added a single solar panel on the roof and plan to add a second. I would like to explorer a portable wind generator system in the future. I carry a small yamaha 1500 water gas generator also for emergencies.

The nomadic lifestyle is unique, but it is also different. You have to prepare for it by going on small excursions to learn your RV and equipment. Look at it like it is a sailboat on land. Treat the journey as an important event so you adequately prepare and respect the needs you will have. There is nothing worse than forgetting something or breaking down in the middle of nowhere. I advise making checklists, one for departure, and keep a load plan for all items in your RV.

Make sure your vehicles and trailers are serviced and ready to go. Do a walk around and look at things like tires, windshield wipers and anything else that may need maintenance. Check your tire changing equipment and spares. The last thing I want to mention is insurance, make sure you have it!
